Nanotechnology will protect residents of Dubai from fires

Stickers the size of a business card will protect Dubai from fires.

A small sticker the size of a business card that costs only 11 dirhams ($ US 3) will help save lives and prevent damage to millions of dirhams in Dubai.

This is a new development of the Dubai Civil Defense, which is based on nanotechnology. The sticker connects to any electrical appliance and reacts to a spark or flame, releasing a substance that copes with fire and prevents it from spreading. The area around the ignition source is cooled, which prevents the risk of reignition.

Similarly, Pyro stickers from Indonesia's Actok company work. They are already available for sale in the UAE.

Dubai Civil Defense Colonel Ali Hassan Almutava said about 80 percent of fires are caused by power outages. Another cause of fire is the use of low-quality materials during construction.

“The technology will be used in buildings around Dubai from next year,” Colonel Almutava promised.

Major General Rashid Al Matrushi, Director General of Dubai Civil Defense, personally demonstrated how the sticker works during a tour of the technical unit and the command center of his department.

He also demonstrated a security center that monitors more than 56 thousand non-residential and 1.8 thousand residential buildings in partnership with Etisalat.

The service seeks to reduce emergency response times and focuses on fire prevention. In 2017, response times averaged just under eight minutes, and incidents resolved on average within 20 minutes.

Dubai Civil Defense is also working on the use of video technology and unmanned aerial vehicles to direct firefighters to specific points of the building when the fire spreads.
