Careem Launches Budget Taxi Service in Abu Dhabi

Budget cabs from Careem come on the Abu Dhabi roads.

On Tuesday, May 29, Careem launched a budget taxi service in Abu Dhabi.

For this service, the company uses about 300 "economy cars" of three models: Lexus ES350, seven-seat Toyota Previa and Chevrolet Impala. Trips will be paid at the rate of AED 2.35 ($ US 0.64) per kilometer.

Bassel Al Nahlawi, Managing Director of Careem in the Gulf Region, said the introduction of an economy car fleet was driven by customer requests in the capital.

In addition to launching a new service, the company will reduce tariffs of its luxury limousine park by more than 30 percent, which will also replenish new cars. Previously, the cost of the trip was 4 dirhams per kilometer ($ US 1.08).

The news was announced at a joint Careem press conference with the Integrated Transport Center (ITC) in Abu Dhabi.

Muhammad Al Kamzi, general manager of ITC, said: "We are trying to give people a choice. We see a demand for such services around the world."

He also added that the department is in talks with Uber to return to the Abu Dhabi market.

It was also announced that the Emirates will be able to use their personal vehicles to work in taxis.
