Unmanned vehicles will travel around the eco-town of Dubai

The Dubai Transport Authority will prepare the infrastructure for autonomous vehicles in the first "sustainable city" within the emirate.

Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has signed an agreement to operate unmanned vehicles as part of the Sustainable City project in Dubai.

This initiative supports a government strategy to move 25 percent of public transport services to autonomous means by 2030.

Abdullah Yousef Al Ali, Director General of RTA Licensing Agency, said: “The Memorandum of Understanding underlines the commitment of RTA to engage in public-private partnerships to realize its strategic goals for smart transport.”

Faris Said, CEO of Diamond Developers, the company with which the memorandum was signed, added: “The joint efforts of the public and private sectors and the exchange of experiences in support of sustainable development that is committed to protecting the environment will serve ... making Dubai a better place to live and business. "

The construction of Sustainable City worth $ 354 million began in 2013. An eco-town is surrounded by a green zone of 2.5 thousand trees to reduce air pollution and noise.

The first phase of the project has already been completed and includes 500 residential villas, 11 greenhouses under bio-domes, 3 thousand square meters. m of urban farms and a mixed use area of ​​15 thousand square meters. m

The second phase will include Hotel Indigo - the first environmentally friendly hotel in the Middle East - an environmentally friendly school and innovation center that claims to be the first building with zero carbon emissions. Construction should be completed by the end of 2018.
