Abu Dhabi journalist prosecuted for racist tweet

In Abu Dhabi, two journalists were detained for racist messages on social networks.

The Abu Dhabi Judicial Department on Wednesday, December 27, announced the call to the prosecutor’s office of two media journalists based in Abu Dhabi. It is reported that journalists posted on social networks offensive messages that have a racist connotation.

Journalists are also accused of using information technology for criminal purposes.

The state prosecution stated that the UAE has strict rules regarding actions that threaten a multicultural society.

The prosecution calls on people to avoid using social networks to spread messages that harm society. It also requested that particular care be taken when preparing, publishing and sending any messages, regardless of whether they are visible to other users.

According to WAM, the Abu Dhabi prosecutor’s office ordered the arrest of a journalist for a racist tweet. The details of the abusive message were not disclosed, but it is known that the profession of the accused exacerbated the crime, because "he is a public figure who influences his subscribers."
