The first transplantation of a donor heart took place in the UAE

An Emirate man was the first patient to receive a heart transplant in the United Arab Emirates.

In the UAE, doctors first successfully completed a heart transplant to a 38-year-old Emirate man who suffered from heart failure.

A six-hour operation was performed at the Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi Cardio Center on the evening of December 5 and in the early hours of the next morning. Currently, the patient is recovering from surgery in a hospital.

“The donor’s heart began to beat right after implantation,” said Dr. Bonatti.

That same night, Dr. Bashir Sankari of Cleveland Clinic performed a kidney transplant on the same donor, performing a vital operation on another patient on the list.

A patient who had a heart transplant was put on a waiting list shortly after the United Arab Emirates adopted a decree on permission to transplant donor organs this year.

Teams from other medical institutions in the UAE and Saudi Arabia also participated in the transplantation. The second kidney of the donor went to a patient from Sheikh Khalifa Medical City in Abu Dhabi.

Dr. Feras Bader, director of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, said about transplantation: "On the same day, the world celebrated the 50th anniversary of the world's first heart transplant in 1967, and it also happened on the day when the UAE celebrated its 46th National "This is a wonderful coincidence, and it demonstrates the incredible progress made by this country."

Dr. Bader also said that over the past two years, a team of 24 people has been preparing for their first heart transplant — attending training sessions and imitating the process of transplantation and surgery many times.
