Dubai refused to extradite a detained criminal to Russia

A Dubai court rejected a request to extradite a wanted woman in Russia in a fraud case.

A Russian woman wanted for fraud in her home country will not be extradited by a decision of a Dubai court.

The woman was wanted in the fraud case, which was recorded between October 2007 and August 2009.

An investigation was initiated after the detention of the suspect in February. The court was advised to send the woman back to Russia.

The Russian woman was present at the court hearing in Dubai in March of this year and asked to refuse the request for extradition.

The woman’s lawyer provided documents confirming that the request was unlawful. He claimed that his client was serving a prison sentence in her home country, and then moved to the UAE.

He explained that, according to the Criminal Code, the accusation is considered a misconduct in the UAE, which means that five years after its commission, the extradition request is invalid.

He added that, according to the agreement between the two countries on extradition, the wanted person should not be transferred to the authorities if the case on which the wanted person was terminated due to the expiration of the statute of limitations.
